It was a challenge to pick one volunteer for this spotlight here at Short North – we had a lot of conversations about who we should highlight. But in every conversation, one name kept coming up – Sheneve.
Sheneve has been volunteering with us for most of the time that the Short North location has been open, and she has tried a little bit of everything in her time here. Whether it be serving as a key volunteer, helping out during inventory, modeling for fashion shows, or showing new volunteers the ropes, Sheneve has done it all.
She is most often in the store on Saturday nights, either handling one of the most crowded nights of the week or discussing books with whoever she is working with on the quieter nights.
We have been very lucky that Sheneve has shared so much of her time with us. Over the past year, Sheneve has volunteered over 230 hours in store. We greatly appreciate her willingness to try anything, her patient competency, and her ability to laugh freely. Sheneve has been a big part of the Short North team in the past, and we look forward to more Fair Trade fun with Sheneve in the future!
We got to talk to Sheneve about her experience as a volunteer. Here's what she had to say:
What inspired you to begin volunteering at Global Gifts?
I discovered Global Gifts by chance while searching for volunteer opportunities through Hands on Columbus and Volunteer Match. I heard a little about Fair Trade while I was in college (fair trade coffee and chocolate) and I really liked their mission.
What is your favorite thing about Fair Trade and/or Global Gifts?
Its mission: To provide a fair wage, safe working conditions, and education opportunities to individuals around the world.
What is your favorite Fair Trade product or artisan group?
It would probably be Global Mamas. So much variety from a group of talented women.
Do you have a favorite country where Fair Trade products are sourced and represented in our stores?
Probably Ghana, where Global Mamas is based.
Any advice for new volunteers?
This is probably the most fun I've had volunteering because it's a cause I really believe in. So I would tell new volunteers to have fun with it. Some days may be slow and you might not know everything there is to know about a particular item a customer asks about, but just take it in stride.
