Mona has been volunteering with Global Gifts Nora since 2014. Mona is a hardworking and efficient volunteer and is always looking for a task to do. She supports our staff well when she processes orders and talks with customers on the shop floor. She is always kind and willing to help others and gives experienced guidance on how to best accomplish a goal. When not at Global Gifts, Mona spends time volunteering with Random Acts of Flowers and at her church, St. Luke's United Methodist. We are lucky to have a dedicated volunteer like Mona working here at Nora. Thank you, Mona!!
We got to talk to Mona about her experience as a volunteer. Here's what she had to say.
What inspired you to begin volunteering at Global Gifts?
I am at a time in my life when I am able to volunteer at non-profit organizations that focus on people who need strong advocacy support. Global Gifts totally meets that description.
What is your favorite thing about Fair Trade and/or Global Gifts?
As an advocate for both women and children, it is important to me that Fair Trade provides an opportunity for more fair payment for labor and also makes it possible for increased education opportunities. The guidelines for work conditions is also key in my appreciation for the Fair Trade guidelines.
What is your favorite Fair Trade product or artisan group?
I am drawn to the kisii soapstone products from Kenya. The work in progress hearts are something I find to be a wonderful “thinking of you” gift for someone meeting challenges in their life, and the wedding knots with their meaningful accompanying information card are always appreciated.
Do you have a favorite country where Fair Trade products are sourced and represented in our stores?
I find it hard to have a favorite country represented in our products as each of our source groups are worthwhile and benefits from our support.
Any advice for new volunteers?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Both staff and other volunteers are wonderful sources of information about products and procedures.
