My name is Amelia Easley, the founder and host of the Sustainability Of: podcast. Each week we dig deep into the “sustainability of” a topic, industry, or company. This week, while not on a podcast episode, we are honored to be engaging in the important dialogue on fair trade coffee with Global Gifts.
Coffee has been an industry that, since the beginning of its mass production, exploits workers in developing countries. Fair trade coffee indicates that the workers who farmed and produced the coffee in your kitchen were paid a fair wage. That way, middlemen aren’t taking all the profit from your bag, but it’s invested into the farmers instead. While my expertise is in the fashion industry, there are plenty of parallels. Why wouldn’t we support this initiative? The cost is not significantly different, and the quality often leaps and bounds beyond its counterpart.
Beyond just receiving a fair wage, Fair Trade Certified facilities prohibit GMOs, toxic chemicals, and forced child labor. They promote safe working conditions, direct communication with sellers, community development, and more. Learn more about the importance of fair trade practices here.
Ultimately, it’s an easy choice. I’m more than happy to pay to support coffee farmers and their communities.
