Mitra Bali Fair Trade, a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, functions loosely as a cooperative of artisan groups representing artisans who make wood, silver, bamboo, coconut, ceramic and other handicrafts. Mitra Bali Fair Trade’s design center offers free design service and trend analysis to artisans. The organization’s shop in Denpasar, capital of Bali, provides access to the local market.
Then called Yayasan Mitra Bali, Mitra Bali Fair Trade, located on the island of Bali, was formed in 1993 to support poor artisans facing ruin because well-established businesses controlled prices and monopolized the burgeoning Bali tourism market. Mitra Bali Fair Trade is a member of the International Fair Trade Association and adheres to the principles of fair trade. The cooperative only works with producers who support gender equity, provide healthy working conditions, use environmentally sustainable materials, and do not exploit child labor or women. Mitra Bali Fair Trade consults with artisans on pricing and costs to ensure fair remuneration. Mitra Bali Fair Trade helps artisans during periods of low orders with no-interest loans and the loaning of cows. Mitra Bali Fair Trade also supports a reforestation program—an environmental initiative, as well as an effort to prevent artisans from selling their land.
