Global Gifts Fair Trade Store Celebrates 30 Year Anniversary

August 16, 2018 (Indianapolis, Ind.) – Global Gifts, www.globalgiftsft.com, a local, nonprofit, Fair Trade retail establishment will be celebrating 30 years of providing hope and opportunity to artisans around the world through the sale of unique, hand crafted, fair trade items such as jewelry, handbags, personal accessory items and home goods, on Saturday, August 25, 2018.

Established as a non-profit organization, the first Global Gifts Fair Trade retail storefront opened in 1988 at 7874 N. Michigan Road in Indianapolis armed with a tiny staff and just over 40 volunteers. Prior to that time, the organization took form as a small initiative—selling crafts monthly from the First Mennonite Church basement as well as at house parties, local bazaars, and craft fairs.

Over the past 30 years, Global Gifts has grown to over $1,800,000 in annual revenue and more than 300 volunteers donating over 15,000 hours annually to help customers, stock shelves, and ring sales. From jewelry and home goods to toys and food items, the stores showcase quality, handmade, one-of-a-kind items from over 40 countries. As members of the Fair Trade Federation, products at Global Gifts are verified to be fair trade. Since opening the first storefront in 1988, Global Gifts has expanded to four brick and mortar locations, an online retail site, and to be the wholesale distributor for the Imani Workshops, a Fair Trade group that provides sustainable income opportunities to HIV-positive artisans in Kenya under the Indiana University-Kenya collaboration.

“The long term growth of Global Gifts inspires me, “said Alissa Head, new Executive Director. “The concept was really ahead of its time, and still leads the way in building equitable and sustainable trading partnerships and creating opportunities to alleviate poverty. By providing a marketplace for artisans who are at risk of extreme poverty and even human trafficking, we help them support themselves through sustainable businesses that ensure fair wages, gender parity, and environmental stewardship – while also respecting cultural heritage. It’s really a win all the way around!”

Over the last 30 years, Global Gifts has relocated from its original location first to North Willow Commons at 86th and Ditch then to its current home in the Nora shopping plaza. Other locations include Mass Avenue in downtown Indianapolis, Bloomington, Indiana and Columbus, Ohio.

Global Gifts also partners with other community non-profits by holding shopping nights with a percentage of sales going to the participating charity.

All Global Gifts stores will host a special “birthday party” themed event on Saturday, August 25th. The celebration will include complementary treats, fair trade food samples, music, drawings, contests, and prizes.  Guests can sign up for their newsletter to receive a coupon for 30% off one regularly priced item. The birthday event schedule can be viewed on their website at https://www.globalgiftsft.com/pages/events
