Central Indiana fashionistas take note: this month fair trade retailer Global Gifts unveils their fair trade Summer Trunk Show, featuring ethically-produced fashions from around the world.
The Trunk Show debuts at a time when the fashion world could use some good news. Last month the industry was rocked by two garment factory tragedies in Bangladesh--—a collapse that killed more than 1,100 workers and a fire that killed eight.
“Now more than ever customers want to know where products, including clothing, come from and how they’re made,” says Sam Carpenter, executive director of Global Gifts. “When a product is fair trade, you can be sure the working conditions were safe and dignified and the craftsman was paid a fair wage.”
The Trunk Show will provide a spotlight on fair trade fashion, a little-known area of the fair trade world.
“Fair trade isn’t just for food and crafts,” says Carpenter. “We’re excited to introduce these beautiful, ethically-produced styles to our customers.”
Beginning at the Indianapolis Nora Plaza location, the show will travel between Global Gifts’ three central Indiana locations, ending in early July. It will include a variety of styles for women created by Global Mamas, a fair trade artisan group providing sustainable income opportunities for women in Africa, and Mata Traders, a fair trade group based in India.
