Fun Facts for the Global Gifter: Italy

In our previous Friday blogs about cross-cultural gifting, we've established why finding a gift for your friends from other lands can be a minefield of potential social and cultural faux pas. Stick with us and we'll help you avoid such frustrations (and embarrassments)... this week, in Italy.

Personal Gift Giving: The Thought Counts 
Italians put a lot of thought into gift giving, considering their recipient's interests and tastes. Gifts are expected for social events and to express appreciation for an invitation.

If you are invited to someone's home, gifts of fine wine, liqueurs, high-quality chocolates, pastries, or flowers are appropriate. If you select flowers for a hostess gift, have them delivered earlier in the day so that the hostess will have time to arrange them. You might also consider bringing small gifts for the children of the house, as well.

To give homemade food as a gift is considered a labor of love, so let your culinary talents shine. Gifts should always be wrapped and they will usually be opened at the time they are presented.

- red and yellow flowers, and especially chrysanthemums. They have negative connotations.
- giving flowers in odd numbers.
- giving brooches, handkerchiefs, or knives. These are associated with sadness.
- giving anything in the quantity of 17, which is considered an unlucky number.

Business Gift Giving:
- Gifts with a company logo are considered tacky.
- Any gift you select need not be expensive but should be of good quality.
- Fine foods and liquor are appropriate gifts.
- Italians are wine connoisseurs. When giving wine, make sure it is a good vintage.
