Coffee is a staple in everyday morning routines, whether it’s drinking a cup early in the A.M., on your commute work, or as a late afternoon pick-me-up, coffee is what keeps so many people in the U.S. going through a long day. With all of this buying and consumption of coffee, the question arises; do you know where your coffee is coming from?
Just Haiti will tell you everything you have ever wanted to know about where their coffee comes from, how it helps the country of Haiti, and how it helps local farmers. Just Haiti was started in 2007 with the mission of changing the lives of Haitian farmers in economically at-risk communities as well as the coffee industry. They began by taking fair-trade-plus to Baraderes, Haiti, a town where the founders already had strong ties with through a sister parish program. They wanted to help this community rebuild what they had lost when their coffee growing business collapsed in the 80’s. Eventually, Just Haiti expanded to five other locations with the same mission, to help these farmers earn what they deserved. In 2014, it was reported that the growers netted 62% of each dollar spent on their coffee, meaning the growers themselves are making more than the mission workers helping them! This is a huge margin for farmers to receive, even by Fair Trade standards.
With six different grower associations located throughout Haiti, they have over 100 working farmers keeping them strong and steady, making them able to support themselves and their families, all while helping Haiti environmentally by continuously planting trees and enriching Haitian soil.
Just Haiti has also teamed up with the Coffee Growers Association to provide scholarships to young children interested in becoming farmers. These scholarships enroll them in an intensive university like program in the summer months that helps them learn valuable lessons in business and agriculture.
