Block Printing with Local Kindergartners at Global Gifts Short North

Look who visited Global Gifts Short North recently! Kindergarten students from St. Joseph’s Montessori School in Columbus stopped by the store for hands-on learning about block printing.

Many of the textiles at Global Gifts, especially those made by fair trade artisans in India, are block-printed with beautiful designs. Spanning back as far as the 12th century, block printing is often the best way to reproduce a highly detailed pattern onto fabric and is widely practiced today. It requires a steady hand and a keen eye!

During their store visit, the students from St. Joseph’s Montessori School learned a little about the geography and culture of India from a story book and then Global Gifts store manager, Alissa Head, taught them how to block print on cloth bags that students got to take home along with a mini-bar of fair trade chocolate!

Global Gifts loves to have student or club groups visit the store to learn about specific fair trade topics or artisan techniques or for a store tour. If you are a teacher or group leader and would like to arrange a visit, click here for contact information for the Global Gifts store close to you.
